Get the most out of your product photos
I’ve heard this a thousand times.
It’s just a product on a white background …that’s so boring.
What would you say if I told you that you are missing out on untapped opportunities by ignoring the lowly product on white photo.
One of my clients was a major grocery chain in St. Louis. Each week we met and discussed the images they wanted for their weekly circular. We discussed how we would place the cans of pork-n-beans in a kitchen environment and the bath soap in a bath environment, seldom did we do a product photograph on white.
And what happened? They had a huge library of product images to choose from but the images all looked very similar.
With so many similar images on the page viewers would simply pass over them all and not stop to read.
Their solution? Remove the product from the background and place it on white.
Fortunately they were able to use many of our background shots and mask the products out of the backgrounds to achieve the look they were going for.
The use of product photography on white saved the day and opened up a world of design opportunities for my client.
Sometimes referred to as a strip-out, silhouette, or silo for short, this type of masked shot can be a powerful tool in your advertising bag of tricks.
So how can you use strip-out product photography?

Add your brand colors or logo:
Image is everything and you have worked hard to develop and nurture your businesses brand identity.
Why not use it in your product advertising too?
Here I have taken a simple product photo made for Exit 11 coffee house and introduced their brand colors and logo to create an appealing image of their bacon quiche for their menu items.

Change sizes to lead the viewer’s eye
No one says your image needs to stay small. All the images we provide are hi-resolution which frees you up to use them in different ways and draws attention to the items you wish to promote.
Make sure whoever shoots your images is providing you with a large enough file.
Below is an example of where a product shot on white was granted a generous 3/4 of the catalog page. The result is a pleasing way to lead the viewers eye back to the supporting shots on the left side of the layout.

Infographics
Infographics are a great way to show the features and benefits of your products. A picture is worth a thousand words could never be truer than in an infographic.

Drop your image into different backgrounds
Here is a client we have that takes our on white product photos and drops them into different backgrounds and even adds props. They can change out the backgrounds with ease. As a bonus they can test which backgrounds generate the most sales.
Still think a product shot on white is boring?
I certainly hope we have shown you some ways to think different about your photography on white. Now go out there and create something beautiful.
There is nothing stopping you but your imagination.
